The Maryland MDE Septic Permit Process 6 Steps and Their Timelines
Step 1: Perc Test and Soil Evaluation (Weeks 1–4)
A Maryland-licensed soil scientist conducts perc tests at the proposed primary and reserve septic field locations. The soil scientist digs test pits, evaluates soil profiles (texture, structure, drainage class, depth to restrictive layer), and conducts the timed percolation test. Results are documented in a soil evaluation report submitted to the MDE.
Both a primary field and a reserve field location must be identified and tested; the reserve field protects the homeowner against the primary field failing years later (the reserve field cannot be disturbed during construction and must be preserved permanently).
Step 2: Septic System Design (Weeks 3–6)
